In Mauritius, Kaya is an icon. Musican and singer, he invented Seggae – a mixture of Sega (traditional Maurician music) and Reggae. Defender of the Creole cause, he died in prison after daring to smoke marijuana during a concert. His death in 1999 sparked riots of unprecedented proportions in the normally peaceful island. It was with emotion and respect that I photographed his musican son, a modest young 18 year-old man, and the spitting image of his father.
